When the German army crashed over the Russian border in 1941, Hitler was confident of a swift and decisive campaign. He nearly got one, but the heroic defense mounted by the vast Soviet armies slowed the Nazi advance. This resistance was carried out by the ordinary Red Army soldier, known to the Germans as “Ivan.” Brave, resilient, and fiercely loyal, these troops fought in brutal conditions with simple yet effective equipment.
