These are the men who fought ferociously to defend Mother Russia from the German invasion of 1941 through to the fall of Berlin in 1945. Mostly simple peasant soldiers, they were trained to obey orders without question. Their lives were harsh, and their battles stand among the largest and most grueling in history, defined by unimaginable scale and suffering.
