<p>Throughout the Red Army, persistent shortages meant that most units lacked adequate logistical and transport support. One significant exception was the engineer detachments. Their technical skills were essential to the success of military operations. Tasks such as bridge construction, demolition, fortification building, and the placement or clearance of minefields demanded a level of expertise well beyond the training of ordinary conscripts.</p>
