Despite Mussolini’s famous claim that Italy had eight million bayonets at the ready, the reality of the Italian army was far less grandiose. Largely made up of conscripts, many soldiers lacked proper training, equipment, and motivation. Unit performance varied widely, but Italian troops still showed notable resilience in key battles across North Africa and the Eastern Front.
