Italian Alpini Mountain Troops

Known as “Le Penne Nere” – the black feathers – after the signature raven feather on their headgear, the Alpini are Italy’s elite mountain warfare troops. Formed by Royal Decree in 1872, they are the world’s oldest specialized mountain infantry. Renowned for their endurance, adaptability, and combat skill in harsh terrain, the Alpini played a key role on several fronts during World War II.
