Hundred Kingdoms: Sicarii
Prohibited by law from recruiting men-at-arms, the theistic Church turned to the Sicarii to fulfil their role as bodyguards and executioners. The ban, written in archaic language, was circumvented thanks to a legal argument put forward by the Church: the Sicarii fought without armour, and even older laws authorised all peasants to carry ‘blades’ for hunting or personal defence. Thanks to their political influence, the Church exploited these subtleties to deploy the Sicarii in large numbers, although this manoeuvre still deprived them of conventional forces. Raised from childhood on the principles of the faith, the Sicarii are formidable and dedicated warriors, unshakeable in the face of death when fighting the enemies of their religion.
