Despite a determined defense during the opening hours of the Normandy invasion in June 1944, Hitler’s forces in northern France were comprehensively defeated and forced to retreat westward. Although reinforced after Operation Dragoon—the southern France landing in August 1944—the Allies faced significant logistical challenges as they advanced toward Germany, stretching their supply lines. The massive airborne assault, Operation Market Garden in September 1944, failed to achieve its objectives, threatening the momentum of the Allied advance.
