In the summer of 1940, following the Fall of France and the Dunkirk evacuation, Britain faced the looming threat of a German invasion under Operation Sea Lion. With much of the nation’s heavy equipment abandoned in Europe, the British government urgently needed an inexpensive way to bolster airfield defenses. The solution had to avoid diverting resources from conventional armaments.
